SUMMERSIDE, PE - Summerside Electric Utility is proud to report that its diverse energy system has enabled it to maintain reliable service without interruptions or requests for conservation.
Summerside's proactive approach and investment in renewable energy, supported by robust grid infrastructure and new investments, ensured seamless service delivery during the recent extreme weather. The City of Summerside Electric Utility did not experience system strain or fuse failures, highlighting the resilience and reliability of its network.
“Our team worked diligently throughout the fall to strengthen the grid in preparation for peak demand periods like this,” said Greg Gaudet, Director of Municipal Works. “Our diverse energy mix, including solar, wind, and battery storage, has proven its value in reducing reliance on traditional diesel backup generation and providing stability to the system.”
During this cold snap, Summerside’s local renewables and battery storage significantly alleviated pressure on the broader electrical grid. This reduced demand on Maritime Electric and NB Power lines by approximately 19%. The Sunbank solar farm, and battery system’s ability to charge and discharge at peak times, along with wind generation, contributed to Summerside Electric’s ability to maintain a balanced and reliable supply.
“As temperatures plummeted, we managed to avoid using diesel generation while still meeting our community’s energy needs,” Greg Gaudet added. “This demonstrates the value of having a diverse and sustainable energy portfolio to support both our community and the wider region.”
Mayor Dan Kutcher praised the efforts of the Electric Utility team and the city’s ongoing commitment to investing in our reliable and renewable electrical generation, storage and distribution system.
“Our ability to maintain reliable service during challenging weather conditions speaks volumes about the foresight and innovation driving Summerside’s energy strategy. Our investments in core infrastructure and sustainable energy systems have positioned us as a leader in reliability and resilience. We must continue to invest intelligently in our existing assets and new technologies to ensure we can meet the evolving electrical needs of our community and provide greater energy security in the years ahead,” said Mayor Kutcher.
Summerside Electric Utility remains committed to providing reliable, sustainable, and innovative energy solutions that benefit the local community while easing the load on regional energy systems.
