SUMMERSIDE, PE - The City of Summerside is excited to announce a new public art initiative that will light up the downtown core on Saturday, October 19th at 6:45 PM: “Lumières de l’île; Francophone Art and Culture through Projection.”
Attendees will see art come to life with projections and lasers cast onto the Holman Building (250 Water St.) like a large outdoor canvas accompanied by a musical soundscape. This unique event is free and open to the public, highlighting Summerside’s commitment to arts, culture, and the beautification of its downtown spaces.
In the weeks leading up to the event, Daniel Sahli and Mika Ventura, experts in the field of digital art and laser mapping, conducted a series of workshops for local French and immersion schools. Participants explored the growing world of digital art and created their own works using industry leading software and equipment to showcase at this event.
Mayor Dan Kutcher expressed his excitement about the project, saying, "We are proud to support this incredible initiative that blends art, education, and community spirit. This project not only brings beauty to our downtown but also fosters creativity in our youth. Summerside is a city that values public art, and this event is a shining example of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the vibrancy of our community spaces."
Project lead Travis Boudreau (Leader in arts education for the Department of Education and Early Years) emphasized the educational importance of the initiative, stating, "Lumières de l’île is an opportunity for students to engage in the creative process while learning about a new and innovative medium. These workshops allow them to not only create art but also understand the technical side of how their work will be projected. I’m thrilled to be working with such passionate young artists, and I can’t wait for the community to see what they’ve created."
The City of Summerside has provided financial and logistical support to ensure the success of this initiative, reinforcing its dedication to public art and the revitalization of the downtown area.
Join us on Saturday, October 19th at 6:45 PM for an unforgettable evening of art, creativity, and community
spirit.
